Independent Study Ideas

What ideas do you have for incorporating independent study in your classroom?

I loved the ideas from our speaker about getting the kids to write to government officials in our community. We have written to favorite authors and also fictional characters in books. In first grade you can get away with writing letters to Officer Buckle and Gloria or
the Tooth Fairy asking questions. That is always a hit to get answers back individually. (Get upper grades to write individual letters back, they love it.) I've done independent projects called "Our Fantastic Family Tree" where we use the "Student Treasures" company to bind them when they are done. Kids interview parents, and both maternal and paternal grandparents for homework for 4 weeks and then we write up sloppy copies, edit and final copies about their lives that are illustrated with markers and then bound professionally. These are a great Spring activity and great for an author's tea to invite grandparents to. It is something first graders are very proud of. And it shows their own handwriting and voice in their first year of school, a real keepsake for families. And kids find out neat facts about their ancestors. We also do a "tree" inside the book with a genealogy as far back as parents can help them go. It turns out cool. You can look up student treasures on the web. It gives each child 1 free copy of the bound book. Pattie Moss

Pattie, what a great program! We were just talking today about the different levels of need in grade levels for Independent Study. This is something we will keep working on.

Wonderful activity. It is so great to see first graders getting the opportunity to really show what they can do with a little guidance.
